Karen S. McInnis

Ms. McInnis graduated from Grace King High School in 1988 and completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Management Systems at Louisiana State University, A & M College in 1994. She received her Juris Doctor from Vermont Law School in 2003.

Ms. McInnis was admitted to practice law in Vermont in 2003, and spent the first years of her legal career there as a small town “country lawyer,” catering to the various needs of the local people. Karen returned to New Orleans in 2008 and was admitted to practice law in Louisiana in 2009. She is also admitted to practice law in the United States District Court (s) for the District of Vermont (2005) and the Eastern District of Louisiana (2011).

Karen McInnis provides her clients the time, attention and respect they deserve. Former clients describe her as personable and someone who put them at ease. Karen has amassed extensive knowledge and honed her research skills through experience representing health care providers in complex litigation. She thoroughly analyzes a case from the beginning and provides the client with honest, straightforward feedback about the strength of his/her case. What truly sets Ms. McInnis apart is her strong attention to detail, her diligence and her commitment to communicating with clients throughout the litigation process.

Karen has been practicing for approximately eight years, with her most recent efforts focused on commercial litigation with an emphasis on health care, and has additional significant experience in the areas of business transactions and litigation, toxic torts, real estate and criminal law.

Of note are Ms. McInnis efforts with the former New Orleans firm of Smith, Jones & Fawer on behalf of Gran Bois, Louisiana residents in their fight against Campbell Wells (produced water treatment facility) and Exxon in the mid-90s (Friloux v. Campbell Wells, No. 75,524, 17th Judicial District Court, Parish of Lafourche, La., verdict August 9, 1998). Also significant are her more recent efforts in obtaining additional compensation for numerous Louisiana homeowners in connection with their post-Katrina insurance claims, with settlements totaling over a million dollars, and her current assistance with homeowners’ legal efforts at obtaining compensation and rebuilding of their Chinese Dry Wall contaminated homes.

Also of importance is the recent decision she secured in the ongoing case of Omega v. Healthnow in the 24th Judicial District of Louisiana for the Parish of Jefferson. Ms. McInnis was successful in obtaining “general” jurisdiction over Healthnow, a foreign insurer, which is a rare occurrence in litigation. The decision was upheld by the Louisiana Supreme Court.

Karen, her husband, Chef Mark D. McInnis, and their son, Murdock, have settled in Old Mandeville near the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, and in their free time they enjoy gardening, boating, biking and entertaining.
