Hypoxic Injuries

The brain must receive a continuous flow of oxygen, or cells will begin to die and vital processes become interrupted. When oxygen is kept from the brain, a hypoxic-anoxic injury, (HAI) occurs. Hypoxic injuries occur during a partial lack of oxygen. Anoxic injuries occur when the brain is deprived of all oxygen.

Diminished oxygen results in damaged cells, affecting physical and cognitive abilities. It can also create psychological problems. The brain’s ability to recovery from hypoxic injuries depends primarily on the part of the brain affected. The pace and extent of recovery is largely unpredictable.

In adults, hypoxic injuries can be the result of a heart attack, but may also be caused by anesthesia accidents and other medical mistakes. Infants may suffer hypoxic injuries during birth that lead to permanent brain damage or cerebral palsy.

Hypoxic injuries devastate the injured and their families. Treatment may be complicated, costly and time consuming. Medical bills and rehabilitative care can destroy the family finances. That is why speaking to a qualified attorney is so important. Contact Lamothe Lea Aertker for a free evaluation of your case. We may be able to help your family recover compensation to pay for the care of the injured.
