Facial Palsy
Facial palsy is an unfortunate injury that may occur during birth. In some cases, a facial presentation during birth causes the injury. But more often than not, it is caused by improper use of forceps or failure of the physician to order a C-section when it was the most prudent course.
When the nerves located on the side of an infant’s face are damaged, the child may have an asymmetrical (uneven or uncoordinated) face, noticeable when the baby cries. If the nerve damage does not heal, this asymmetry can be permanent.
Why Does Facial Palsy Occur?
In some cases, the doctor makes the mistake of continuing to attempt a vaginal birth when it has become unsafe to do so. At other times, overworked doctors with multiple laboring mothers in their care may be tempted to use forceps to hurry the birth along. In some cases, doctors would prefer to avoid a C-section for personal reasons and refuse a mother’s request for C-section in favor of forceps.
When used properly, forceps may actually protect the infant during birth. But because the correct method is so difficult to master, forceps make birth injuries more likely. The resulting nerve injury can cause permanent facial palsy.
